MobileMe is toast

in TechnologieGeen reacties »

For years I was a loyal and hapily paying DotMac user, but the transition to MobileMe made the service loose its Mojo (details in Dutch here).  So, after 5 years of fun an loyality it’s time to move on. I have quit my Apple services.

I want to make clear that I’m not exiting the service, because the change cost me a lot of functionality: ecards, filesharing, online bookmarking and more. Oh no. I’m leaving because the service doesn’t work as advertised and moreover it creates havoc in my calendar and addressbook.

It doesn’t synchronise, but writes over things. Yes folks, you read that right. Every day I find duplicate bookmarks in my browser, miss appointments in my Calender and have to go through endless addressbook updates when my local addressbook gets overwritten by the cloud version. The result is a lovely service statement: Adding 5112 records, deleting 5111. Synchronising would mean something like adding the one record I created last night. Right?

And please don’t say that I use the wrong settings, because I really tried everything. Read every how-to available and visited numerous support forums. I even tried working with one ‘master’ computer on which I changed stuff, just to see how other workstations got updated….

Apple solutions used to work when the company was that one trick pony. But competing on that many battlefields, made the company sloppy and loose its magic. MobileMe is just an alfa version of software that will cost you an arm and a leg and gives you a good rise of bloodpressure. Nothing more. I advise you to stay clear from it. And being a very loyal Apple user, that hurts.
